Beaulieu, where the donkeys roam free 🫶 Beaulieu sits on the edge of the New Forest, and its resident donkeys are famous for wandering the village lanes, browsing hedgerows and generally taking right of way over traffic. I absolutely loved seeing them! They’re not actually wild - they’re owned by local “commoners” who hold ancient rights to graze their animals freely throughout the forest. Donkeys are smaller and more docile than the New Forest ponies, and hardy enough to stay out on the forest all year round without being brought in for winter. They prefer browsing trees and bushes over grass, which is why they’re often found nosing into hedges (not always to the delight of local gardeners) They’re calm and curious, especially around food, but feeding them isn’t recommended as it encourages bold behaviour and human food can be harmful. Beaulieu itself gets its name from the Cistercian monks who founded an abbey here in the 13th century and named it “Beau Lieu” - beautiful place.
