@allimcb_md_momof3: Puberty for girls typically starts between ages 8-13 with the average being around age 10. Puberty starts with breast development. About 1-2 years after breast development, pubic hair starts to develop. And 2-3 years after breast development is when we typically expect a girl to start her period. Typically between ages 10-15 with the average in the US being 12. Prior to starting her first period, she may begin to have some whitish/clear vaginal discharge, a growth spurt and some emotional changes. So make sure you are talking with your daughters about changes they may expect to see. It shouldn’t be one big conversation but a bunch of small conversations to help them feel comfortable and confident. And for them to know they can come talk to you about anything they are experiencing. When to go see a doctor: - Signs of puberty before age 8 or no signs by age 13 - No period by age 15 or within 3 years of breast development starting - Or by age 14 if having one of the following: excessive exercise, eating disorder or dark hair growth on face, chest or back #girlmom #obgyn #puberty #firstperiod #gyn
