@luke.mcginnis23: His mom and I have a great co-parenting relationship, and nobody is doing anything wrong. I just had a hard night and am struggling with a new part of co-parenting nobody warned me about. As my son gets older and school, friends and activities start centering around one home, how do you keep from feeling like you’re slowly becoming a side character in their life? Any advice would honestly be appreciated. #coparenting #singledad #fatherhood

Just to clarify, I’m fully involved and available in my son’s life and I have a great relationship with his mom and stepdad. Nobody is keeping me from him. This is simply a father being honest about the emotional adjustment as his child grows up. Sharing them with works isn’t an easy transition 😭

It does get harder. My twin girls are 15 and my home is home base for one and the other wants to live with dad. I feel left out of ones life as does he, but we go to events together and sit together to show a united front. We still do joint holiday meals. Many people think we are still married because we show such a united front and this creates a harder time for dating for us as others dont understand and are jealous of it. Stay strong, he will remember the times you spend with him.

Just keep showing up. As a single parent with a son, whose dad, who disappeared and doesn’t show up. The fact that you are. The means the world to him. I promise you! 🙏🏻💙

You got this. One day at a time. But thank you for this post. I will make sure I stay aware for my daughter’s father. This will happen to him also. But he is always welcome in my house. We are all just wading thru the mud

I’m very sorry that has to be hard . My divorce came later and my ex lived in a different state so my Home was the homebase and I was blessed. I guess to have that I know I was. But now everyone is grown and gone and has an empty nester. It’s not a good feeling, and I shared your feelings a little bit it’s not gonna be to your level when my kids would grow and make more friends and need me less and less it’s hard not saying it’s the same as yours at all everyone’s pain is their painbut you have to find things to do to fill that time. Avoid so you don’t set in depression or anything it’s just kind of the natural course even if you were in the same home, the kids are gonna pull away from us and that’s hard very hard.

Invite his school friends to your home for a weekend night so you are still involved with his school friends. Give them a great adventure to talk about later. Children need what each parent brings to the table. Never doubt your worth in his life. 😎✌️

I can relate to this 100%, I coparented with my oldest, and I wish I could tell you it gets easier. I would just keep making yourself available to him, and make every moment special. ❤️

Don't sit on your phone while he's there. My son comments often on how his dad is always on his phone at extra curricular activities. One night I had the sound on on my phone (its usually on silent) and we were outside throwing the ball. He stopped and goes "Don't you need to get that?" I told him no, we were throwing and it could wait. His response was "well, dad always has me stop as soon as his phone goes off so he can check it." Kids see everything. They feel everything. Be present when you can and enjoy the moments. Them growing up is a huge part of life, even in split family homes. I think we just feel it more because we already have to share them.

My kids younger days were challenging since I didn’t see my kids as much since mom house is home base like your situation. Stay consistent and available for whatever is needed then be active in his activities. You two will find something to bond over as he gets older. I coach my son(13 yr old) football teams and at almost every other sport to cheer him on. My daughter(16 year old now) was more of a challenge since she didn’t really play sports but she loves riding jet skis with me then her friends come out to hang out with us.

I know it’s hard but you seem like a great dad and you just asking for advice shows you truly care. As a co parent on the other side with a teenager, just show up as much as you can! FaceTime or call him when you aren’t with him. Don’t ever argue in front of him. It makes them feel like they have to choose sides. These are little things they notice. As a main parent, I also struggle with feeling this way as they have gotten older. You are not alone! Being a parent is very hard emotionally!

You show up at his sporting events, practices, school events, special events. Sounds like you and his mom have a good relationship so I’m sure she keeps you in the loop!

My kid is 16. Totally get it. Use the time to do things you wouldn’t do: join a group, finish unfinished projects, do something you always wanted to do, find who you are as a human, not just a parent, hit up old friends ( I didn’t really have any at the time lol). But don’t change as a parent, show up as they know you to show up because that’s what makes them feel safe ❣️

No one will replace you. You’re dad. Regardless of home base! It was an interesting convo this summer with my daughter regarding this same thing. She had some insight that I had never considered and it put my heart at ease. You can DM me if you want. Stay the course. You’re not phased out, everyone is evolving together. You are always going to be relevant.

He will always have other people, what matters most is the bond you keep with him. With the time you have together let him know your always proud of him, your his safe place and make a tradition between you and him like your camping or just days fishing together. As parents when watching our children grow up they will need us less, just always keep in contact with him and be there when he needs you! He will always cherish you as a dad even if you don’t feel like you’re needed or he don’t always show it, you will always mean a lot to him. You will always fit in even if you’re not there in person ❤️Never doubt what you mean to your child, your his dad, that’s your place, it’s what truly matters! You will go through many emotions as they grow just know you will always be wanted in different ways compared to other people in his life but moms and dad hold a special place in our children’s hearts 💞

I’m the only parent now but it wasn’t always like that. It will get better. My son is 7. Going on 18 aswell 🤣🤣 My son’s dad called me and spoke words just like this to me. You will figure out how to fit yourself in. Your his dad there’s always a place for you dad 🫶. He’s got it all coming up and needs to learn to manage it maybe mom and dad could help him learn to manage that together? Just a suggestion is all.

I understand this as mom who’s house is the home base. Although my situation is a little different as his dad wasn’t as involved in the younger years and now trying be in the teenage years. Just keep showing up. Keeping being his dad. He will always remember that he never had to doubt if you’ll be there.

I think we all feel this, I think it’s just as they grow up and become more independent for all parents. Like it’s awesome to see them grow up but scary for us parents all at the same time. But we just gotta keep being their steady rock. But you’re not alone coming from the “home base parent”! 🫶🫶

They spread their wings. When you have him, create stuff the two of you do together now. Around 9, they are off with their friends, they want to cook their own meals. Its okay to move from dad role to supervisor role. He'll always come to you to spend time with you, so keep the just you and him activities.
