Technically, the Panther with the panzer IV turret wasn’t a prototype. It was a one off field mod created and used by a Ferdinand battalion as a command tank alongside the only Tiger P to see combat. The turret was welded on and as such couldn’t even rotate.

well the engineers ( my perspective ) they it had the chassis but not the turret for the VK30. They're like, "Okay we made the chassis but we do not have the turret. Should we put the Panther turret? Just call it?" The other engineer is like, "Yeah why not?"
