@cbssundaymorning: The small town of Gander in the Canadian province of Newfoundland saw its population virtually double when U.S. airspace was closed on 9/11, grounding 38 international flights on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. For five days, Newfoundlanders gave shelter and comfort to 7,000 stranded passengers and crew members. "We have an emergency plan," said Claude Elliott, who was mayor of Gander on 9/11. "But there's nothing in that plan to tell you what to do with 7,000 people if they decide to drop in for four or five days."
With all their compassion they’ve shown us in the last 200 years it’s a shame our government is trying to bully them.

The efforts of Canada that day are staggering. I'd definitely recommend reading up on Operation Yellow Ribbon for how Canada assisted that day. Truly one of our proudest stories.

We love our neighbors to the north. It makes me so sad that we’ve forgotten moments like this and opted instead for anger and hostility. They have been great friends and neighbors for a long, long time.

Just watched Come From Away a few days ago and I thought the actor playing Claude Elliott made an interesting accent choice for him. Now hearing him, that was a really good impression.
