@60minutes: "One of the things that I don't think I'll ever forget: There was very little color because of all the dust from the South Tower. It looked almost like a gray desert." 60 Minutes cameraman Mark LaGanga recalls what it was like reporting from the World Trade Center on 9/11, 25 years ago. For more from the 60 Minutes archive, tune in tonight at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Lesley Stahl will revisit one of the first 60 Minutes stories after 9/11, reported by her late colleague Ed Bradley, about Summit, N.J., which lost nine residents in the attacks. #worldtradecenter

Towards the end you can hear the alarms on the firefighters in the background. That sound only triggers when a firefighter hasn’t moved in a certain amount of time, that sound is so damn haunting.

“Please go away” is so real because I get the point of recording but sticking a camera in someone’s face on one of their worst days is the worst way to get footage

It still feels incredibly weird to me the deep impact 9/11 had on me. I’m Italian and I was just 8 years old. September 11th is the day may auntie and uncle celebrate their wedding anniversary and that year was their 25th one. I was in the living room watching the tv with my mom who was ironing some clothes, at the phone with my auntie. I can still recall the program I was watching switching to breaking news. I can recall the second airplane crash and the following collapse. I can recall my mom asking my auntie “are you watching?” and her yes after a long dark pause. We’re used to witnessing tragedies on tv and on our smartphones nowadays. In 2001 watching this live on tv felt like a movie scene. It felt foreign. Haunting. To this day.

Those poor firemen. They knew some of their colleagues were just trapped under that rubble.

I was climbing stairs in a hotel recently. I had to pause at the third floor and while there, I thought of the firefighters climbing 70+ stories.

Can you imagine watching the identical building next to you collapse while you are trapped, loosing faith of being rescued.

I worked at an airport, for American Airlines. I’ll never forget how everyone, passengers and employees, worked together. We were all scared. We were all worried. For ourselves, for each other, for our loved ones. We took stranded passengers into our homes, we put them on busses, we helped in any way we could. SO many planes diverted to our small city, and the airport was eerily quiet for days. All Americans came together, and we were united as a country.

I was at work as a steelworker, I didn’t think a building like that could collapse like that, from a plane crashing into it. All building codes changed after that day.

I remember working in a hotel in Dublin, the Brendan Tours were staying and were all elderly people from New York , myself and a couple of colleagues were sitting on a bed in a vacant room watching this on CNN and witnessed the 2nd plane hit, I will never forget the absolute commotion and cries on the corridor of all our guests, scrambling to call home and crying because many had adult kids working there, probably many more in emergency services, that moment will forever be in my mind, much love to all from Dublin Ireland 💔 🇺🇸 🇮🇪 Never Forgotten 💔 💙
