We had just started a field op with 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines. They canceled our training and told us to head to our rooms because we might leave at any moment. They came banging on our door an hour later with sirens going off yelling "get to the quad this not a drill". I called my mom and said "I'm going to war I love you". We all get out to the quad area and they said good job Marines this was just a drill head back to your rooms for now 🤦🏻‍♂️. We didn't end up leaving until January 2002 where we left on a fleet of seven US naval ships. I was on the USS Bataan. It took 35 days to sail there and 36 days to sail back. While I was in Iraq I went 35 days without a shower. My socks felt as hard as concrete.
