The lump is real. It's not in your head, and it's not you being dramatic. When your body goes into a stress response, one of the things it does is tighten the muscles around your throat and vocal cords. That tightening is called globus sensation. It feels exactly like something is stuck. Nothing is stuck. The muscle is just clenched, the same way your jaw clenches or your shoulders climb toward your ears. Most people learned very young to swallow this reaction instead of letting it move. A kid gets told to stop crying, stop making a scene, calm down — and the body obeys by locking the exact muscles that would let the feeling out through a sound or a sob. That lock becomes the default setting. Decades later, the same muscles fire the same way, at a meeting, in traffic, mid-argument, and it reads as an emergency. It isn't complicated. It's one system doing one job — bracing — at a moment where bracing isn't useful anymore. The fix isn't a trick for the throat. Chasing the lump with breathing exercises alone treats the symptom and skips the switch that flipped it on: the actual stressor sitting underneath, the one your body is still guarding against. There's a way to test which one you're dealing with. Press two fingers gently against the front of your throat while the lump is there. If it eases even slightly, that's muscle, not obstruction — the kind of thing a doctor rules out fast and a therapist takes seriously. If pressing changes nothing and swallowing feels genuinely blocked, that's the one time to actually get it checked, not talked through. ... Notice what your throat does right before the tightness — what you were about to say, or not say. That's usually where the real information is, not in the throat itself.
