I’m from Guam. I was in 5th grade & woke up at 10am. I was late for school. Ran out and saw my parents crying on the couch when the first tower was hit. My dad told me I get to miss school. I sat with my mom and then it was announced the 2nd tower was just hit and we can see people jumping. We turned off the tv & started praying. We must have sat for hours in silence. No ties to NY. We knew no one from there. But we felt so broken. A tiny little island thousands of miles away mourned w/ you.

I had just moved to Toronto the week before 9/11. One memory that stands out was the blood donation centre had a line up wrapped around the block of people who wanted to donate in case NYC ran out of blood for the wounded.

I'm from the UK and my friend was suddenly pulled out of our lessons because her dad worked at the top of the North Tower (we didn't know about any of it at that moment). We didn't see her for the rest of the week because it took a few days to make contact with him, but it turned out a bagel made him late to work and he was the sole member of his team to survive!

i live in ny, but i remember one of my classmates (we were 10) had an irish penpal. the penpal's entire class sent letters of condolences to our class. some even sent money in their letters to donate, like a dollar or two. it became a monthly part of our english class that year to correspond with our new penpals

I think Britian— their royal band or something played the national anthem to honor those who died. They never before played a different country’s anthem before in history.

There's a play called Come From Away. It's a 9/11 story from the perspective of people who were grounded on a small village in Newfoundland due to the US closing their air space and the residents whole live there. It is amazing!!

My grandma was in Italy vacationing. They weren’t allowed to come home for like a week. The hotel they stayed at graciously allowed them to stay for free bc they didn’t have extra cash

Im from New Zealand. My older brother says this is one of his clearest memories as a kid, he was watching cartoons, and the next thing he knows it cuts to static and then the news showing everything. He says he still so clearly remembers the images being shown, almost every detail. He didn’t even realise our parents walked in behind watching as well.

In Toronto, Canada, I was 9, No TVs got rolled into our classrooms but I remember another teacher coming in to speak with ours and how freaked out they seemed. Then they disappeared and a room full of 9/10 year old left alone for so long wondering why all the adults looked scared, I dont think they told us what happened just that school was done for the day and parents were being contacted for pick ups. I think my dad probably told us about what happened and I remember seeing some footage from the news my dad was watching of the burning towers. I don't know if I fully grasped what happened until much later tbh. My mom worked at a daycare, so she was stuck at work waiting for all her kids parents to come pick up I think. Many many years later in journalism school we spent weeks being made to watch footage and review photos (it was essentially a project for marks), the clips of people falling are still tough for me to handle and I break down every time I see it.

UK, aged 20. Worked on the shop LUSH An elderly lady came in in absolute shock after watching the buildings collapse on a TV in a department store. She was so upset, and kept saying "it's all gone". I made her a cup of tea and sat with her.

I remember asking my mom what was her reaction of 9/11, she was working and was on her way home when the pentagon got hit, when she came home she saw my grandad glued to the tv, we live in Ireland and he was crying because of the people jumping from the building. He was in the army and he never cried in front of family but he was overcome with the emotion of the fear of those who had to jump and how no one could help them that far up. He had been to America in the 90s and all he could think of was how high those building were. He went to church for the rest of the week to pray for all of them ❤️

My sister was in her Junior year of college abroad in France. It was terrifying. Because honestly we had no idea if this was going to happen to other countries. There was no way for me to call her because I didn’t have long distance international calls on my land line. She left a voicemail on my parents answering machine crying and saying she was with a French family and safe. There were a lot of people collecting up Americans and bring them into their homes, just to keep them safe, just in case they were targeted for being a foreigner. We didn’t have a great relationship with France politically at the time, and it only got worse after this. Oh freedom fries… smh

It’s come to my adult attention this year that 9/11 was indeed catastrophic to the world’s sense of security. One of the powerhouses of the world had been attacked and no country felt safe.

In the UK, about 2pm or so had just come home from running errands in town, TV was on already, just entered and watched just after the first plane hit, mum comes in just as the second plane hit, says ooh this looks a good film, what are you watching, I said the news, her face went white……Never forgotten that moment the second plane hit and the way my mum looked when she realised it wasn’t a film….

I was 14. Moscow. It was after school for us. It was just me and my sister home alone. It was going to be a great afternoon. Mom wasn’t home. So no one was going to boss us around and we could watch tv. So we were in front of the screen when it began. Black screen first. I flipped through channels. They all were black. I thought it was antenna problem. And then it began. We watched second plane hit the tower. Watched it all aired live. Mom and dad came home when towers were already gone. My sister was crying in the kitchen where the tv was on. I went to open the door. And scared them both. They didn’t know. So seeing me in whatever state I was in scared them. Mom thought someone died. She yelled at me to tell her what the hell has happened. Dad went to check on sister, came back and said she was just sitting there choking on tears. He didn’t notice what was on the screen. And I just thought - how do I even say it? They won’t believe me. But I did anyway. Said they were gone. Twin towers in NYC were gone. Mom didn’t believe me. Dad did. He’s been in WTC multiple times for work. They just watched tv all night. Didn’t even know we watched it live. It was night already when mom tried to persuade us to get some sleep. She had a hard time understanding why we had this reaction. Or rather why it was so intense. Until one of us told her that there were people trapped in there and it must’ve been so bad inside they were jumping from the windows. We saw them jump. And then first tower just suddenly started falling with all those people still inside, and those on the street. And then the second one collapsed too. Like, we watched it happen. Live. She was shocked of course. She thought it was just news coverage. Not live broadcast of the entire thing. Next day at school we didn’t have classes. Teachers didn’t want to pretend it was just a normal day. So they talked to us. I remember the questions were - will they (New Yorkers) ever recover from this / is it the beginning of WWIII / where will they hit next. We thought they could just hit any other city, and thought Europe will be next.
