actually the purpose of valve overlap is to use the momentum of the leaving exhaust gas draw in fresh charge to have a complete fresh charge but some fresh charge also goes to the exhaust. it's done on purpose to increase power at the expense of fuel consumption

Question for the actual gear heads. Does this mean it can harm the engine more over time than keeping a stock cam? I understand a good tune keeps things in check but i just learned how a cam works so the uneven combustion (in my mind) would affect it over time correct?
