@ladiesofliberty: Global poverty has fallen faster over the past few decades than at any point in history, fastest in the countries that opened their economies to markets and trade. What changed the picture wasn't redistribution from rich to poor, but the spread of market economies that let ordinary people produce, trade, and build wealth of their own. Two centuries ago, nearly everyone on earth lived in extreme poverty, regardless of what economic system their country followed. Wealth simply hadn't been created yet on a scale that could lift large populations out of subsistence living. What changed that wasn't a transfer of existing wealth from the rich to the poor. It was the spread of capitalism itself, which allowed ordinary people to start businesses, own property, and trade freely enough that entirely new wealth got created where none had existed before. Capitalism does let some people become extremely wealthy, and that fact often gets mistaken as proof that the poor are losing out. But wealth in a market economy isn't a fixed pie where one person's gain requires another person's loss. A person who builds a successful company creates new jobs, new products, and new value that didn't exist before, rather than taking a bigger slice of something that was already there. The countries where the poor have stayed poorest are consistently the ones with the least economic freedom, not the most, which is the opposite of what this myth predicts.
