My ex husband joined the marines right before our son was born in 2004. I was 18 he was 19. He served two tours in Iraq & Afghanistan. He had a lot of issues before the military but it took everything he had left. He died 2.5 years ago after a long battle with alcoholism, he was only 38. I remember when he first came home he said he wished he could just go back over there because he didn’t feel like he could be a normal person in society anymore. So many nights he woke up screaming. I’m so sorry your family has had to experience this hell.

My boyfriend served in Iraq as well and he repeats the same sentiment...he feels tricked by the US and the military. He cant stand when someone tries to 'thank' him for his service.

I'm convinced that the only reason we don't have universal healthcare, free education, etc. is because how else would they recruit so many poor people into the military?

Coming from a military family, I can’t express enough how predatory the military recruitment system is… I wanted to join myself to try to pay for college but I was denied for self harm scars, probably for the best.

This sounds so much like my dad’s experience. He was a heavy equipment operator for the army. They said there wouldn’t be combat— my dad saw friends blown up in their convoys. Kids with bombs strapped to them. The burn pits were real. It’s terrible what we have our service members do.

I never met my father-in-law. He died in 1994 from cancer as a result of agent orange exposure in Vietnam. My kids will never know their grandfather. He was 47 years old.

I feel for you. I had two uncles who served in the Vietnam war and both had health issues due to agent orange. died before that was recognized as a cause of their illness as well as the 1000s of others.

I’m an ER nurse and anytime I have an elderly patient wearing a Vietnam War cap, they’re going to get whatever they want from me. They were treated so horribly after being forced to go fight in a war they didn’t want to fight and many of them were teenagers. It breaks my heart.

Wow! I never realized this! But you are so right. I was in 10th grade on 9/11. The recruiters were at my school heavily all the time every year I was in high school

After 9/11 most of my cousins said that their school ROTC programs in philly began heavily pushing them to enlist if they were too poor for college/trade schools the more messed up the background was for people the more they pushed towards rotc classes under the guise of discipline and the inner city bootcamps and placement facilities regularly had recruiters there. They also targeted scholarship kids from boarding, private, and charter schools.
