Dynasty - “I’ve Just Begun to Love You” feat. Soul Train dancers and The Story Behind the Song: Today on the Bluegroove channel we go back to Saturday morning, 1980. as folks everywhere grab a bowl of cereal, turn the dial and let the Hippest Trip in America roll into the living room. Suddenly, the needle drops on a bassline so smooth it stops you mid bite: It’s Dynasty, sliding into “I’ve Just Begun to Love You” and the whole living room starts grooving along with the dancers... and did you know that this groove was grown right here inside the very walls of the Soul Train studio? Here’s the story: A promoter named Dick Griffey took the job as Soul Train’s talent coordinator. Griffey spent his weeks booking the biggest acts in the country, and as he watched all that rhythm pass through the studio, he had a revelation: Why are we just broadcasting the music when we could be making it? So in 1975 he and Don Cornelius founded Soul Train Records, which Griffey later restructured as SOLAR Sound of Los Angeles Records: the West Coast’s answer to Motown, and they were loaded with heavy hitters: Shalamar, The Whispers, Lakeside, Midnight Star... and today’s selection: Dynasty. They even pulled two magnetic dancers right off the Soul Train floor: Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel, and built the superstar group Shalamar around them. The show didn’t just play the music: it grew it. And you can hear that homegrown confidence all over this track. Kevin Spencer on vocals and keys as the groove slides in beside you and stays, and then Linda Carriere & Nidra Beard come in on vocals trading lines like friends who finish each other's sentences. Leon Sylvers III, fresh out of the family group The Sylvers, produced and played the bassline himself as architect of the SOLAR sound. Cornelius and Griffey could have been satisfied hosting someone else’s party. Instead, they built a house of their own, making sure the young people dancing on the floor had a direct path right onto the stage. They didn’t just show up to the room someone else built. They built their own, and held the door wide open... and the window too, as we all got to watch each funky episode.
