I just finished Death of the Pastor’s Wife and honestly, I have A LOT to say. First of all, I am not going to sit here and say I know exactly what happened to Mica because I wasn't there. Her death was officially ruled a suicide, and JP has not been charged with causing her death. But if you ask me what I think the documentary showed very clearly, it is this: That woman was being psychologically destroyed long before she died. What disturbed me the most was the way religion appeared to be intertwined with the control. Using Bible verses and “God’s will” to manipulate a woman into accepting things that are clearly unhealthy is not spirituality. That is manipulation. And PLEASE, this thing happens. I have seen a similar situation up close with a friend whose ex-husband used the Bible to mentally blackmail her. Everything became, “The Bible says a wife must…”, “You are disobeying God if…”, “You are supposed to submit…” until the woman starts questioning her own sanity and feels guilty for even wanting basic boundaries. That is not godly leadership. That is control wearing the clothes of religion. And then the sexual aspect of JP’s behaviour??? 🚩🚩🚩 The documentary left me extremely uncomfortable with the way he seemed to view a wife’s sexual availability as some kind of obligation that could be demanded or used to justify a man’s behaviour. There is a HUGE difference between intimacy in marriage and treating your wife like she owes you access to her body. At some point I stopped watching him as “a pastor who happens to have marital problems” and started watching him as a man who seemed to have an enormous need for control (spiritually, emotionally, sexually and psychologically). And that is what makes the story so disturbing. Because imagine being married to someone who is not only your husband but also your pastor, spiritual authority, church leader and the person constantly telling you what God supposedly expects from you. Where exactly do you run to? The scariest part of religious abuse is that the abuser doesn't always have to say, “Do this because I said so.” Sometimes they say, “Do this because GOD said so

But I do believe the documentary raises a very serious question: Even if someone didn't physically cause a person's death, how much psychological, emotional and spiritual damage can one human being inflict on another before we stop calling it simply a “bad marriage”? That question stayed with me long after the documentary ended. And honestly, some people are not crazy because they don't believe in God. Some people are dangerous because they use God to make you believe that their craziness is God's instruction.
