crab claws are a multi-layered defense system: Direct offense: Crabs can deliver painful pinches to deter or injure attackers. Blue crabs, for example, have a grip strong enough to make a predator let go. Intimidation & shielding: Crabs raise and spread their claws to look larger, or hold them in front of the body as a physical barrier. Deflection: A 2025 study showed that fiddler crabs' conspicuous claws divert predator attacks away from the vital carapace — similar to how a lizard's tail works. Models with bright claws drew 50–61% more attacks to the claw instead of the body. Autotomy (self-amputation): If a predator grabs a claw, the crab can voluntarily snap it off at a pre-set fracture point, escape, and regenerate the limb later. This is a proven survival strategy for species like porcelain crabs. Weapon platforms: Boxer crabs carry stinging sea anemones in their claws, effectively turning them into living weapons. So claws serve as a shield, a decoy, a weapon, and even a sacrificial escape tool — making them one of the most versatile anti-predator adaptations in the animal kingdom.

You can only take one claw, but hypothetically you catch the same crab 2 days in a row that poor buddy may be clawless if he’s big enough (one claw is bigger so sometimes only one claw is big enough)

How about we make a new rule where it's illegal to hunt Stone Crabs. Without it's claws it's defenseless, even if they grow back. For weeks they can't eat or defend themselves. So they dying either way.
