Fat Joe has reignited the conversation after saying that even though he is Puerto Rican and Cuban, he is Black and even “the Blackest.” Now the N-word debate is back. Being Latino does not mean someone cannot be Black. Black Latinos exist. Afro-Latinos exist. Black Cubans exist. Black Puerto Ricans exist. That is not the issue. The issue is when proximity to Black culture becomes permission to override Black discomfort. Growing up around Black people may explain why someone uses the N-word. It does not automatically justify it. Being from the Bronx does not automatically settle it. Being part of hip-hop does not automatically settle it. Being accepted in Black spaces does not automatically mean you get to ignore Black people who say, “That word still hurts.” Because the word did not start as a term of love. It started as degradation. And changing the ending does not change the root. So the question is not only whether Fat Joe feels connected to Blackness. The question is why anyone would fight so hard for access to a word born from Black pain. Nobody should be fighting for access to a wound.
