Most helpful: understanding what ADHD is! I got a diagnosis from a clinic and had no idea what to do with it until I found my most recent therapist who helped me understand how it affects me and how to start to get more in touch with my nervous system and learn the power of my thoughts/behaviours. Also that I’m not an evil person for having wildly different energy on a day-to-day basis. Least helpful: years ago before knowing I was an ADHDer, being told to “trust your gut” and listen to my impulses (particularly around substance use). Now I know that was just my brain seeking safety but at the time it made a lot of sense to not shame myself for wanting certain things which ultimately led me deeper into seeking cheap dopamine, which I still do but to a lesser extent and with more awareness and intentionality

For me, it was learning to recognise the signs at the start of a procrastination spiral. I often struggled feeling behind on tasks and then feeling terrible for being behind and then putting that same task off to avoid feeling that terribleness feeling. Therapy really helped me identify those early warning signs and work through the small things I can do to break the spiral before it becomes a problem. Those types of mental tricks for breaking procrastination are different for everyone but largely consist of something sudden to help kick start your brain into action

Telling me to write EVERYTHING down. Carry a notebook with me to put everything in it so it's in one place. You can still use sticky notes as long as they end up in the notebook!
Get a timer that shows the physical amount of time, lookup a time timer.
Annnddd, I think the other thing was task goblin, it's a site that breaks things down into easier steps. Don't remember if therapy is where I learned it but still a good tool!
OH. If you take ADHD meds, keep them next to your bed and take them a couple hours before you actually need to wake up/get out of bed (or wherever you get up in the middle of the night for a bathroom break) and then go back to sleep for a bit and when you actually need to get up it will make it easier because your meds have already kicked in!
Hope these are helpful to someone 🫶🏻❤️

I personally think everyone must go for Therapy. I learnt that almost everyone has the same traumas but ADHD just makes those feelings worse.

The three different notebooks method; there is a specific name for it but completely forgot- it’s basically 1) having one notebook where you just write down every single thing you have to do: every bit of it no matter how small 2) one notebook where you organise your day according to the first notebook what’s realistic to finish on that day and the time stamp in a margin and 3) another notebook where you have a calendar style and see visually what tasks/ appts are coming up and all

Understanding that ADHD is a nervous system in fight or flight and learning to manage that, shaking the internal beliefs regarding oneself rather than focusing on the symptoms, all the tools and strategies are good and they do serve a purpose but they are just bandaids if you dont get out of fight or flight. Also the let them theory

I have a compendium of notebooks: Work calendar week-to-a-page & to do list; Personal “ta da list” 1 day per page + planned to do dos in a different colour; Journal of random thoughts with minimum daily entries time stamped; collections book of ideas, lists etc. The ta da list especially helps when I haven’t “felt” productive but I can see all the things i actually accomplished.

I learnt that I to understand my feeling but understanding myself was learning about adhd. Therapy helped to deal with my emotions but not the symptoms of adhd
