@itsjillianrowe: Humans have come up with some, ummm.. unique ways to take care of our dead. Sky burials. Turning the bones. Dressing deceased relatives in new clothes. Fantasy coffins. Extreme embalming. Transumption. And then there’s us, pumping a body full of preservative chemicals, putting makeup on it, displaying it in a satin-lined box and eventually burying the whole thing underground. The more I researched the South Fore practice of transumption for my kuru videos, the more I realized how easy it is to look at another culture’s death rituals and think, What the fuck? Until you describe your own rituals like an anthropologist who has never seen them before. Different cultures have developed really different answers to the same question of what do we do with the body of someone we love when the person we knew is no longer inside it? Turns out humans are fucking weird about death. And also remarkably similar. #DeathRituals #griefandloss #grief #Anthropology #DeathAndGrief
