@kevankenney: Did you know Kim Kardashian was behind a top 10 R&B hit in 2003, four years before Keeping Up with the Kardashians premiered and years before the world knew her name? The story starts in 1998, when a teenage Kim Kardashian met producer Damon Thomas at a recording studio while he was working with 3T, Michael Jackson's nephews. Damon Thomas was one half of the production duo The Underdogs with Harvey Mason Jr. In 2000 Kim Kardashian and Damon Thomas eloped at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas. She was 19 and he was 28. Kim later joked on Keeping Up with the Kardashians that she got married on ecstasy. Living in the house with them the entire time was Tyrese, then a young R&B star and former MTV VJ working on his third album, I Wanna Go There. Tyrese says he lived with Damon Thomas and Kim Kardashian for three years while the marriage fell apart. Damon Thomas later claimed Kim was cheating, which Kim Kardashian denied. What nobody disputes is that Kim was working as a stylist for Brandy at the time, which is how she met Brandy's little brother Ray J. Back in 2011 Harvey Mason Jr. said the song came from a real situation one of the Underdogs was going through, a girl mistreating a guy and the guy's response. That song became How You Gonna Act Like That, released November 19, 2002 on Clive Davis's J Records. On The Kenny Burns Show in August 2026, Tyrese said it plainly: it was inspired by wondering how did she act like that while she was with Damon. How You Gonna Act Like That climbed to No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2003, the only top 10 hit of Tyrese's career and his highest charting song ever. Rolling Stone ranked it No. 51 on its list of the 100 Greatest R&B Songs of the 21st Century, and Tyrese admitted he never knew that. Harvey Mason Jr., who cowrote and produced the song, now runs the Recording Academy, the organization behind the Grammys. Kim Kardashian and Damon Thomas divorced in 2003 and four years later she had her own reality show and the whole world knew her name.
