I raised my kids in a predominantly white area because I inherited a house from my mother. At the time when The Cosbys was becoming a huge hit my daughters loved it. One day I took my 4 year old and 3 year old daughters to Kmart and a large black family was shopping nearby. Suddenly my 4 year old screamed " Look Mom! It's the Cosbys! My instant reaction was to try to quiet her down so the other family wouldn't be offended. Thankfully their reaction was much better than mine. The Dad burst out laughing and started waving to the girls. They handled it with grace and allowed me to tell them at home that not all black people were from the show. It was an important conversation that eased us into later conversations about race and that everyone was a person with feelings like their own no matter what color of skin they were born with.
