@drmaryclaire: Since 1982, the share of a woman's life after 65 spent independent has not moved: 70 percent then, 70 percent now. Men went from 78 to 81. In a study published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2016, Vicki Freedman's team at the University of Michigan tracked disability-free life expectancy across 30 years and found that older women, who started ahead, no longer live more active years than men despite living longer lives. Freedman named the conditions that took those years: arthritis, depressive symptoms, fall-related fractures, and Alzheimer's disease. Her own conclusion was that "enhanced attention to these and other preventable causes of limitations among older women could extend active life." Preventable is her word, and it is the right one. Bone density can be screened and treated before the first fracture; falls can be trained against with strength and balance work; depression in older women can be diagnosed instead of written off as aging; and the 2024 Lancet Commission on dementia attributes roughly 45 percent of cases to 14 modifiable risk factors, hearing loss, hypertension, LDL cholesterol, physical inactivity, and depression among them. In my practice, none of that gets ordered when a woman is told her decline is normal for her age. The system that produced this gap was not built to look for these things in women. It can be. My word do I dislike my arthritis. I’ve learned so much from you, and others on social media. I’m stronger than I’ve ever been. I can up off the floor and a toddlers chair hands free. I’ve been on HRT since Feb 2025 at 65. I take many of your supplements. It still pisses me off that we women were denied HRT for so long.

Thank you for sharing this. Why then is there a proposal to develop a men’s health initiative by two lawmakers???

It has to be legally mandated. The lawmakers need to get involved. Corporations will never make the changes needed on their own, because it’ll mean going to market later than if they ignored or under represented women in their trials.

We need to create a new system outside of the current system. I think you communicating with us in TikTok is the start.

Have you ever done a video comparing the strengths of the estradiol patches to the strengths of the gel packets??? The pharmacist had no clue. I asked my GYN if she accidentally prescribed me the wrong number. She gave me a non-answer. I already increased once, and I still want to drive into a wall.

Any medication that was ever approved without a woman being in the trial needs to be redone also. Medications affect women way differently than they do men.

Even as a mental health provider, I’ve not ever heard depression being referred to as a reason for disability and loss of independence, as you have referred to it. I’m shocked. You taught me about the increase of suicide, but wow
