The STRATEGIC DEMONIZATION of African TRADITIONS was never just about religion, it was about POWER. African spiritual practices were branded pagan, fetish, primitive and demonic, while comparable acts of reverence elsewhere, sacred relics, holy objects, processions, shrines, kneeling, kissing, touching and venerating the remains or symbols of saints, were protected by more respectable words like devotion, heritage and veneration. The point is not that every ritual is THEOLOGICALLY IDENTICAL. The point is that colonial systems taught Africans to view their own sacred traditions through a lens of SHAME while treating EUROPEAN TRADITIONS as the NATURAL STANDARD of CIVILIZATION. And they succeeded so deeply that generations later, Africans themselves can be the first to ridicule an ancestral practice they barely understand while DEFENDING A FOREIGN one they inherited without ever QUESTIONING the DOUBLE STANDARD. They convinced the African to hate his own reflection, then congratulated him for becoming “civilized.” That is why the most frightening colonized mind is not necessarily the uneducated one. IT IS THE HIGHLY EDUCATED ONE that has memorized INHERITED HIERARCHIES so completely that it mistakes them for neutral scholarship, calls its own culture superstition before studying it, and calls somebody else’s tradition sophisticated before questioning it. When prejudice survives long enough inside education, people stop recognizing it as prejudice.
