...especially 48 hours before World Suicide Prevention Day. Like so many across the charity and mental health sector, we are shocked and devastated to hear of Papyrus' sudden closing after 30 years of providing crisis support and suicide intervention for young people. Papyrus has paved the way for so many other organisations to work within the suicide prevention space and I'll never forget how valuable their support was when I (Amy) used their service when I was 20. The need for urgent mental health support doesn't disappear because an organisation providing the support disappears. The closure of Papyrus shines a lot on the reality of not just the mental health sector in the UK but the charity sector too. There's an assumption that only the smaller organisations, like ours, would be the only ones struggling financially when actually all organisations of all sizes can be at risk of closing at any time. We also want to address the ongoing pressure on third sector services, like ours, to deliver similar results as the public sector but with a fraction of the funding, resources, and support.... it is simply unsustainable and those who will suffer the most are those who are trying to access the support and help they deserve. We hope the Government (@andy.burnham 👀) and other key decision makers take note and wake up the reality of what's happening and create an actionable response that supports all involved as the impact of this is devasting for so many. We're sending all of our love to those impacted and affected by today's decision. Although we're not open right now, we won't stop advocating for better services for all, especially young people and welcome ANY conversation across the UK to ensure the support is available 💜
