I want my world to have pure quartz deserts? 🤗 Turns out quartz is piezoelectric (it generates an electric charge when put under physical stress). A simple sandstorm would produce a fierce glowing statically-charged plasma-like cloud of glass, with electrical discharges. So my pretty white deserts are now prone to violent glass storms that will electrocute you. Ah well, that’s the protagonist’s problem… Stay-tuned! I have a novel about a scientist who inherits a mysterious creature that strands her on a quartz desert world under the lethal glare of binary suns. Can she stave off the sadistic advances of a dictator? Will she find her way back home? Will she be an astronomer or a geologist? Maybe.
