One thing I remember from that day is everyone was amazed at how long the towers stayed up and how critical that was to people getting out. There were nearly 20,000 people in those towers that morning.

Thank you for mentioning all the paper!! Nobody EVER thinks about how much paper would have been in those buildings to sustain the fires after the jet fuel. Especially when you consider the wind too, at that elevation. Anyone with a wood stove knows how critical that draft at the top of a stovepipe can be. The wind at those heights would have been exactly like a woodstove's draft

Easily one of the most succinct explanations I've heard in the last 25 years. I hope this helps some people really understand. People will argue so many "things that don't make sense" without taking into consideration how many factors were impacting the building structures at one time. And the paper. In 2001, we were still very much printing and filing everything. There would have been literal tons of paper in that building. I also think I just realized why I'm terrified of buildings collapsing on top of me.

“Jet fuel can’t melt steel beams” …. “Maybe not but it can certainly weaken them.” This has basically always been my response without fully knowing the science behind it, wonderful explanation. Really makes you wonder, if they had been hit higher up would there have been enough weight to collapse them fully. I suspect yes but probably would have taken a lot longer.

I’ve always wondered how far down the planes would have had to hit for a tower to collapse almost instantaneously. At some point, the amount of weight above the impact zone would be too much for the remaining structure to hold. So I’ve always thought about how much worse it could have been if they had aimed the planes lower into the buildings.

This is why intumescent paint, among other things like fire caulking all seams, is so strictly regulated and required on buildings now. Intumescent paint wouldnt have stopped the fall of the buildings, but it likely would have slowed it to the point of allowing more people to get out

A lot of people don’t realize that aluminum melts at 1,200 degrees and the planes were made out of mostly aluminum. Aluminum is highly volatile once it melts and it can affect the steel of the buildings as well

stupid question: what ACTUALLY caused the fires? i know that the fuel kept the fire going and just made it stronger but what caused the fire in the first place? is it the high impact of the planes’ materials against the buildings’ materials?

If I’m understanding correctly the fact that the South tower was hit closer to the side instead of nearly dead center like the North tower, the South became more structurally unstable? Was it due to location of impact and the weight above “shifting” because the building wasn’t equally being held up on all sides? Sorry if my questions are dumb, I want to make sure I’m understanding correctly.
