The event celebrated Brazilian Independence Day with live music, dance, local vendors, Brazilian food, culture and community. I spoke with 22-year-old organizer Maria Teresa, who shared that her community once had a Brazilian Independence Day parade in New York that she grew up attending. After COVID, the celebration faded away. That history inspired her to create something new for the next generation. “I wanted to make those memories come true again for a kid today,” she told me. With support from her best friend, her mother and her boyfriend, Maria Teresa helped bring the vision to life alongside the 31st Ave Open Street community. Her advice to other young people with a dream was simple: “You can do anything.” For me, that was the story On The Block: a young woman preserving culture, rebuilding tradition and creating new memories for the next generation.
