During excavations in Via Campagnola in Padua, Italy, archaeologists uncovered a Roman cemetery containing 220 burials dating from the Augustan period to the beginning of the 2nd century AD. One of the burials was protected inside this substantial stone cist, sealed beneath a heavy domed stone lid. As archaeologists carefully lifted the lid, they revealed a glass cinerary urn still sitting inside. The glass vessel formed part of a cremation burial. The video records small balsamaria inside the urn, along with “terra di rogo”, material collected from the funeral pyre. Balsamaria were small vessels associated with perfumes, oils and other scented substances used during Roman funerary rituals. The wider cemetery was excavated between 2022 and 2023. Its graves were often closely grouped, suggesting family burial areas, while the quality of the grave goods indicates that many of those buried here belonged to the Roman middle classes. For almost 2,000 years, the stone container had protected the fragile glass vessel and the remains of the funerary ritual sealed inside. #Archaeology #AncientRome #RomanHistory #ancienthistory #History
