I could totally buy a house. But I refuse to do so out of principle. These prices are insane. I am not contributing to this insanity.

I make 300k/ year. Every time I crunch numbers to buy something I cringe at the interest payment. Why would I give anyone hundreds a of thousands of dollars when I can invest it myself?

yup, im a single mom who would rather call the management co, they fix what breaks, pay for all the maintenance, landscaping, solar, hoa, pool, clubhouse, taxes etc etc and all i do is make one single payment every month with none of the headaches, I have other assets and savings so it's not like im losing money it's just way less stressful.

Any of you with an HOA, essentially are renting in part, and owning in part.

I’m single, child-free by choice & pay ~$1,300 for a really nice 1BR with literally ALL bills included😭 Why would I take on a mortgage that costs way more, deal with maintenance & be tied to one place for 30 years when I can just ✨leave✨ whenever I want? I don’t have kids to leave a house to, so honestly… renting makes perfect sense for my lifestyle 😌

I sold my home and now I'm a renter for life. Something goes wrong, one call to my landlord and it's taken care of. No dealing with insurance, contractors, repair people, etc.

Yep! This is me! I rent at 4600. I have a million dollars net worth at age 36. Unless I really want to pay a premium for customizing a house, I’ll rent forever

Can you tell this to my mom? Because apparently “equity” in a house is much more valuable in an emergency. But my investments grow while I don’t have an emergency issue because nothing broken in my rented apt is my responsibility to fix!

I could buy a house outright but I dont want to have to worry about repairs. I’ve owned a home before and the stress of not having to worry about anything is sooo nice. I’ve made the house I’ve rented my own (painted walls, built a fire pit, changed out light fixtures) and ill just revert it back before I move out

SmurfMiata :
yep. i rent for 1600, the same exact house at current rates would cost me 2k with 20% down (and thus no pmi) instead i put 1k/mo into savings cause that 400/mo will grow more invested and i can eventually just buy a house cash if the interest rates dont go down

We rent because we don't want to live where we are forever. It would be stupid because we're moving in 3 years

Yep. Not to mention: as a renter, if something breaks or needs upgrades - that cost isn’t on me. That’s on the landlord. I watched my parents dump 30k into repairs and maintenance. That’s when it stopped making sense to me. Now, in Vegas, add ridiculous HOA fees - and no thanks. I’m happy renting and Airbnb-ing and having location freedom if I want it.

MangoBaby :
Yep - my rent is $1800 and I’d be close to $2.5-$3.5K in PITIA + maintenance. RN with pricing where it is and rates where they are have me making more money in the market. I run the NYT rent vs own calc and right now, for where I want to live, I don’t break even for close to 20+ years. That tells me it makes no sense to buy rn. 41YO and $2M invested up from $1M invested 5 years ago.

I feel like people forget that the mortgage loan is front loaded. Unless you wish to stay in a home for 10+ years, you pay more in interest than you do on your actual loan for accumulating equity. Such a horrid bank practice.

Our rent is 3200 a month. We have 240,000 in cash in a high yield savings earning $800 a month. We had planned to buy but prices are still too high. We also save another $400 a month into that savings account.
