Its rounded, layered surface is the result of mineral deposits accumulating gradually in the same area over an immense period of time. Stalagmites form when mineral-rich water drips from a cave ceiling and reaches the floor. As dissolved carbon dioxide escapes from the water, calcium carbonate can precipitate as calcite, leaving behind a tiny mineral deposit with each drip and gradually building the formation upward. Growth rates vary dramatically with water flow, chemistry, climate, and other cave conditions, so the appearance of a formation alone cannot reveal its exact age. Over long periods, however, these repeated mineral deposits can create massive structures that preserve physical and chemical records of changing environmental conditions.
