I come across under built decks/structures like this every other day here in Texas. This deck likely failed for one of two reasons: 1) The ledger board was not installed properly. The ledger board is what you mount to your home or foundation. In this case, the ledger board was attached to the home and likely didn’t have enough lags, or the lags weren’t long enough, or the lags did not get installed into the framing of the home. Or maybe it was all three of these things! But let’s say the ledger board was attached properly, then it’s possible this deck collapsed due to👇🏼 2) The joists not being installed properly to the ledger. The joists are what you install your deck boards on-top of. The joists were likely toe nailed in with some nails, or even worse they were fastened to the ledger with screws/nails not meant for exterior use (this is not that uncommon). BUT, let’s say they did use exterior fasteners, they may not have been long enough or simply didn’t use enough. At a glance, it doesn’t appear there are any joist hangers on the deck which could’ve potentially prevented this mishap.
