Could you link an article/stats about how it’s worse now? Someone told me the other day that debt in the US is lower than usual, but that seems unlikely

It takes people a long time to learn about money, some never learn. I was never taught about it and had to learn the hard way.

Everything you're saying is correct, but I think you're missing a crucial part. *Why* is the economy designed for you to owe money? Money is a proxy for value. But the real value is a large workforce, incentivize to produce goods & labor at a moment's notice. Debt Increases that incentive & decreases the person's ability to stop producing
The unfortunate reality Is that as a citizen, it is in my best interest to not fall into that trap. But it is also in my best interest for the trap to exist. For others to fall into it & in turn to strengthen the dollar.
Equally unfortunately, It's hard to help people who do not understand that they are being helped. If you were to take credit away, the benefit would be distant and abstract, but the drawback of not having those luxuries would be immediate & obvious. The people who are trying to help would not allow it.

I think it's important to characterize DEBT vs LEVERAGE. The goal shouldn't necessarily to be debt free, the goal should be to be consumer debt free while using (loans) strategically to get into income producing assets or opportunities. To your point, almost any debt is so easy to acquire now and the cost of (getting an education, car) makes it nearly impossible to do otherwise, alongside the ease of financing everything from french fries and shoes. It's wayyy to easy to muddy the affordability of things these days.

You’re also penalized if you pay off all of your debt. The whole system is a scam and set up for you to fail. That’s why I filed bankruptcy and then left the country 😁

You still think it is the individuals fault for going into debt? Please study financialization in order to understand why it's the incentive for corporations to encourage spending on credit.

I’ve said that. Even the wealthy use debt as a tool. Still in debt. Disincentivized to have personal liquidity.

I so appreciate you talking about this because I think it’s under-appreciated how much the credit economy contributes to inflation. When companies raise prices and consumers can’t afford them but choose debt as the bridge, it reinforces that pricing model as credit serves as an artificial extension of purchasing power and drives prices up—companies don’t care if consumers pay by cash or credit, but the longterm financial outcome for consumers is wildly different.

I rather live without than go into debt. I saw my sister go into so much debt she will be owing money 50 years after she dies.

I had to finance my HVAC unit for $12,000 and I have a second HVAC unit that will only give me a few more years. and it hit me the other day that it will go out before the first one’s paid off and I’ll probably have to borrow for that one and by the time I pay the first one off the first one might have to be replaced again because they make things like crap now. I’ll go to my grave on a permanent rotation at the HVAC financing.
