It’s the most functional math. Do math in your head and then break down how you got to the answer. Odds are you’re using common core math.

4th grade teacher here. The only thing different between Common Core and what we used to learn, is Common Core teaches the break down, the why, they how we get to 4x6=24. Instead of it just is 24, the ideas behind Common Core, is teaching the kids that they have 4, 6 times, or 6 4 times. Hope this helps!!

TN native here. when they sent home a note asking me to stop teaching my kids math at home the way I learned. my note back was then dont send homework home with my kids. its the worst

Why are they trying to make kids more stupid? Why complicate it, and make it so parents COULD NOT POSSIBLY help their kids with homework. Then the teacher complains.

Common core math is not new math. There has been a switch from procedural math to a conceptual understanding of how math works. When students have a conceptual understanding of math, their number sense increases.

During Covid when we had to teach our kids. I taught my son how I learned and if the teachers had a problem they just had to deal with it. Be glad he got his work completed. Can’t stand common core math.

It's a balance of logic vs memorization. Single digit math should be memorization. Multiple digit math should be common core. Common core is better at teaching factors and complex unit math. Great example is months in years for loan terms. It's realizing that 300 months is 25 years.

What bothers me is when they require all kids to break it down all the different ways. Math just clicks for some kids and they don't need all of the extra steps

Taught 4th grade (all subjects) the first year and a half at my school. I had more students confused by the breakdown and moving of “discs” for place value and had to spend a WEEK teaching them place value. I would usually start with the curriculum and then I would show them the way I was taught and they would ALWAYS prefer the old way. All common core does is make something simple take more time and effort than it should. If a kid doesn’t understand or is overwhelmed, showing them 3-4 other ways to do it doesn’t help. They just need to see and understand THE way to solve problems.

The beauty about the math we were taught going up is we used our brains to come up with our own ways of grouping numbers. We used critical thinking that made sense the way each of our individual brains work.

As a person who grew up in the US in the 90s, I taught myself to solve math problems using the concepts of Common Core math. The math I was taught seemed illogical to me but I always got the same answer with my approach. My teachers would make me re-do my work the way it was taught even though my work got me to the same number. I think it would be best to teach it both ways because people’s brains work differently.

My granddaughter struggled with common core math. I taught her the old fashioned way of doing things. She was in a private school so the teachers said no problem. She’s a whiz at math and numbers btw. Common core is the stupidest math ever.

Very disappointing take, too often when adults don't immediately understand something they just dismiss it and label it as stupid, which is then a habit the kids pick up instead of actually trying to understand the thing and why it might be beneficial
