Under a system of low taxes, minimal regulation, and open trade, it grew into one of the richest territories in the world by income per person. Economists have long pointed to Hong Kong as one of the clearest real-world tests of what economic freedom can do, since it had almost nothing else working in its favor. Hong Kong's political system has changed since Britain handed it back to China in 1997, and more sharply since Beijing tightened control in 2020. That shift is real and worth knowing about. But the decades of economic growth that came before it are just as real, and they happened because of markets, not despite them. A colony with nothing became one of the richest places on Earth. That part of the story still holds.
