On Monday, September 14 — the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross — Fr. Brent Bowman was celebrating a school Mass at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church in Hopkins, Minnesota. During the consecration of the chalice, he was visibly overcome. He began to weep. He struggled to lift the chalice. For a moment it looked like he physically could not raise it. Almost immediately, people online asked: Was this a Eucharistic miracle? Did the wine turn into blood? That’s how the clip first spread. Fr. Bowman and his pastor have now clarified what happened. It was not a visible Eucharistic miracle. The wine did not change in appearance or taste. Fr. Bowman said he never saw blood. The accidents of the wine remained. What he received was a private, interior grace: a sudden, deeper knowledge of the real weight of Christ’s Blood poured out for our sins. The chalice felt too heavy. He could not lift it for a time. He was careful to say this is not what the Church means by a Eucharistic miracle. And yet the greater truth remains: A miracle happens at every single Mass. The bread and wine become the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ — whether we see it with our eyes or not. This priest was simply allowed to feel that reality more intensely than most of us do. Lord, give us that same faith. Help us never treat the Eucharist as ordinary.
