Lateral ankle sprains often feel “better” long before the ankle is actually ready. Pain going away doesn’t mean: • Strength is restored • Balance has returned • The ankle can handle sudden movement That’s why ankle sprains re-occur so often. Here’s why each of these exercises matters 👇 ⸻ 1. Ankle Range of Motion (Alphabet) After a sprain, swelling and guarding limit ankle movement — especially in directions that protect the injured ligament. Restoring range of motion: • Reduces stiffness • Improves joint nutrition • Helps normalize walking mechanics This should feel gentle, not forced. Movement early on helps the ankle trust motion again. ⸻ 2. Outward Band Pulls (Resisted Eversion) The ligaments injured in a lateral ankle sprain are supported by the peroneal muscles. Strengthening eversion: • Helps protect the outer ankle • Improves dynamic stability • Reduces the risk of rolling the ankle again This is one of the most important but commonly skipped exercises. ⸻ 3. Calf Raises (Double → Single Leg) The calf muscles control ankle motion during: • Walking • Running • Jumping • Landing Weak calves = poor shock absorption. Calf raises rebuild: • Strength • Endurance • Push-off control Progressing to single-leg work is key before returning to sport. ⸻ 4. Single-Leg Balance Ankle sprains disrupt your body’s ability to sense where the ankle is in space. Balance training: • Re-trains ankle reflexes • Improves joint awareness • Prepares the ankle for unpredictable movement If balance feels challenging — that’s expected. It’s a sign this system needs work. ⸻ 5. Controlled Hopping / Impact Work Real-life ankle sprains happen during fast, unexpected movements, not slow exercises. Controlled hops: • Teach the ankle to absorb force • Build confidence • Prepare you for sport and daily activity Start small and controlled. Progress only when pain and swelling stay calm. ⸻ THE BIG TAKEAWAY Ankle rehab isn’t about doing one exercise. It’s about restoring: ✔️ Movement ✔️ Strength ✔️ Balance ✔️ Load tolerance Skipping these steps is why ankle sprains keep coming back. Save this if you’ve ever rolled your ankle — and follow @rehabtheoryofficial for evidence-based rehab that actually makes sense. #fyp #anklesprain #rehab #exercises #physiotherapy
