@invinciblevenus_: Time to reflect on our preferences and where they come from. And btw: people feel comfortable with people who are similar to them. It’s when you have an adversity to all things different to that whennit may become problematic.
Even if a dating preference is racial it isn’t necessarily racism.

As a non-native german speaker, married to a German, it is absolutely exhausting—even after 10 years together. (I am continually learning the language and raising my son here bilingually). Nonetheless, there is still lots of miscommunication/cultural misconceptions and with that, a feeling of loneliness/stifled expression. To be fully understood in the comfort of your own mother tongue is something not to be taken for granted.

How people can call you racist is crazy to me…what if you ONLY spoke German? You’re a unique case because you can speak multiple languages, a lot of people only speak their mother tongue so they would HAVE to have a language preference.

I have the opposite of this, the idea of expressing my feelings/emotions and communicating primarily in my native language (Arabic) feels uncomfortable to me.

This is like me ( an English speaking British woman) saying I only want to date English speaking men because I cannot understand other languages as much as I do my own which I feel is normal. I hope no one has ever made you feel less than for having a preference for dating someone that speaks your mother tongue x

It makes sense to want to be able to completely be understood by your partner. That preference isn't racist!

Language is extremely important. Personally I wouldn't be with someone who shares my mother tongue. Although it is my first language, it is also a very small language (in terms of vocabulary, and expressions), so I feel quite limited by it, and not fully like myself whilst speaking it.

I’m learning German and I don’t think I could date a German speaker who doesn’t speak English fluently, and probably won’t be able to for a very long time even as my German is getting good. I don’t feel like myself when I speak German, I feel like I can’t express myself properly and I hate it. I totally get you!!

there is absolutely nothing wrong with preferring to share your mother tongue with your significant other.

Mother tongue is an entirely different and intimate thing, it’s so natural to want the person you will be sharing your life with to have the same one?

I can understand that, but you communicate extremely well in English, so even though you’re more comfortable with German, I feel like dating someone who spoke English would not lead to any sort of limitation.

I think when dating someone who speaks a different language and they love u/ u love them both sides should make an effort to learn the other language

that's insane to even think that preference would be labeled as racist

Mind blowing topic Isabelle 😊. My mother’s native tongue is greek and my indian father spoke punjabi. I’m fluent in neither. There’s richness in being with someone who doesn’t speak your language. The challenge in desperately trying to communicate with each other can lead to connection. Then passion and romance. 🥰

It would only be racist if you said only white germans (and exclude those who are native german speakers of different ethnicities). You are particular about language to express yourself thats fine.

Interesting bc I married outside of my mother tongue and we ONLY speak my husband’s Language and yes it is exhausting but I am a polyglot and language lover so I guess it was meant to be, our four children are fully bilingual and their first language is my mother tongue even though it’s not the language where we live …..

To be honest as someone who dated a German I definitely learnt or felt that there was multiple miscommunications or cultural miscommunication so I hear you with that being said I do feel that is why I am not with said person aha

Even if u wanted to date German bc that's your physical type or u want sb with your same culture and kids that look like you, it's your right to want that and it wouldn't mean that u hate others. People who say that have lost the plot and are the reason why extremists get away with calling contemporary racism absurd

i get this. i speak a minority language (about half a million speakers), and I've realised that I have to date people that speak my language. the humour, the emotional connection is so much deeper. i've dated people who only speak english, but there's always a disconnect there.

No it makes sense, I have a French friend who only dates French speaking men as it’s her mother tongue and with the person you are dating/in a relationship with it’s fundamental that you are able to communicate clearly. But of course there are many more French speaking countries compared to German speaking ones but that’s just how the cookie crumbles

your not racist for having a racial preference at all we don't judge people for wanting a certain sex why do you draw the line at race you wanting someone with white skin blue eyes is perfectly fine you get to choose who you want to love and have sex with don't let anyone else say otherwise it's ridiculous
