You should leave immediately when a pastor starts abusing spiritual authority, using “God told me” to control your decisions, or making you afraid that disagreeing with him means disagreeing with God.

I don’t like it when pastors have such strong negative opinions about women in their preaching. It immediately makes me wonder how he views and treats his own wife. That’s an instant red flag for me. 🚩

Don't confuse a pastor's position with God's authority A pastor can be a spiritual leader, but a pastor is still a human being. A dangerous mindset is: “The pastor said it, therefore God said it.” Instead ask: What does the Bible actually say? Is the pastor interpreting the passage fairly? Can I disagree without being threatened? Can I ask questions? Would another mature Christian reach the same conclusion? Acts 17:11 is a powerful example: the Bereans listened to Paul but still examined the Scriptures to see whether what he taught was true. Lesson: Respect spiritual leaders, but don't surrender your ability to think and discern.
