I remember my grandma told me she had a cow called Lisa as a kid and she was what for our generations would be a password pet. Had a genuine bond. She loved her. When she came back from school after months from another city, she first ran to her stable/barn/cow place and then learned she'd been sold for meat. She told me how she cried for days and you can't say they're "just food". I'd cry for days if my childhood plush was gone, let alone my pet.
