@globalhistoryvault: Long before the Twin Towers became part of the New York skyline, St. Paul’s Chapel was already standing there. Opened in 1766, when New York was still a British colony, the little chapel has witnessed more than 250 years of the city’s history. George Washington even walked there from Federal Hall to pray after his inauguration in 1789. His pew is still inside. By September 11, 2001, St. Paul’s was the oldest surviving church building in Manhattan. It stood directly across Church Street from the World Trade Center. When the towers fell, the area around the chapel was overwhelmed by debris and dust. Cars were crushed, nearby buildings were badly damaged, and the churchyard was covered in destruction. Yet somehow, St. Paul’s Chapel survived without losing a single window. An old sycamore tree in the churchyard helped shield the building, taking much of the impact before being destroyed. Its roots were later preserved in bronze as the famous Trinity Root sculpture. But the chapel’s story didn’t end with surviving. Within days, St. Paul’s became a place of refuge for the firefighters, police officers, ironworkers, and other rescue and recovery crews working at Ground Zero. For eight months, it remained open around the clock. Volunteers served meals, provided clean socks and boots, offered medical care and massages, and gave exhausted workers a place to rest on the pews. Musicians even played quietly inside as the recovery effort continued outside. The workers left their mark on the chapel in another way. Their equipment scratched and worn the pews as they slept in their gear. When the building was restored, one damaged pew was intentionally left untouched as a reminder of what happened there. Outside, the iron fence became an informal memorial covered with flowers, flags, photographs, letters, and messages from people around the world. Today, St. Paul’s Chapel remains an active church and a quiet reminder of September 11.
