I heard a phrase that codependency is where one person needs the other and the other person needs to be needed

When a therapist diagnosed me with this....I really wish she had explained it this way....because how she did it made me feel like such a shit person...instead of something I could actually understand.
but then again....I maybe wasn't in a place to understand properly and stuck in that harsh dynamic. Either way, I'm in a better place now and not attached in this way.

How do you shift out of a codependent relationship once the partner in need is no longer in such high demand?

My exhusband called me codependent all the time. I later learned in therapy that all I had were regular needs that he didn't want to fulfill. My ex, as he was leaving me, "I need someone with no needs of me." Um, that's not how relationships work.

I've always helped everyone. I became a school psychologist to help kids. it took me years to figure out that I was in a codependent relationship.

We are anxious people, right? Because we can't just let go of someone we love so much, and we end up tolerating all the bad things.

oh well.. I realized it is killing me. Like literally suffocating me and squeezing all of the joy of life out of me. And now that his mother just passed? There is a real threat to my safety in that his grief has the real possibility to take me under with him. When he complained of crying all night, I told him I have been doing the same, so I must walk away. A Zen story I saw on this app about "helping too much" gave me the strength. Since I've been "helping", he has quit 3 good jobs and owes a lot of money. Everyone has their own path, and they may or may not ever learn the lessons they need to, but enabling them assures they won't, and threatens to pull us down with them. Peace & Blessings 🙌 🪷 ✨️

I don't know if I understood correctly. I met someone I became my whole life for. He would do anything for me. Does that have anything to do with what you said here. Has he become dependent on me and what should I do? What should I pay attention to. Please can you answer me
