@pbsnews: Osama bin Laden thought 9/11 would lead to the U.S. leaving the Middle East, says Graeme Wood of The Atlantic. "It didn't work out that way," he says. "I believe over the last 25 years there's been a pretty continuous American presence. It's gotten larger, not smaller." Washington Week with The Atlantic is a partnership between @pbsnews, WETA-TV and @theatlantic, airing every Friday on PBS stations nationwide. He wanted to weaken America and he accomplished that. We are not who we were 25 years ago. Our enemies are playing the long game. They can’t hit us from the outside because that unites us and makes us stronger. But if they work to divide us internally that weakens us and that’s exactly what has been happening since 9/11

He overestimated American intelligence. Surely Americans wouldn’t give up all of their freedom, their economic stability, and waste trillions of trillions of dollars to try and control Afghanistan.

How?? When Japan strikes Pearl Harbor they also thought the same thing. All Bin Laden had to see was basic history lol

Its important to remember that OBL was basing a lot of this off previous American reactions to things like Mogadishu and Beirut, where we did really just leave after a major attack

Miscalculated the psyche of the American people. Across the board and all political alignments people wanted revenge.

From what I understood it’s a little more complicated. He expected it to go similarly to how the Vietnam war went. We go in, they draw out the war, they waste our resources, the military gets worn down, and American citizens (who now realize they’re at risk) beg for the war to stop so we don’t get attacked again. (Don’t cook me, I’m sure there’s a million different ways to read it)

That’s actually fairly interesting if true. I think most of us always thought his goal was to cause America to react violently, kill Arabs, Muslims in the Middle East, and as a result turn worldwide Islam against America, all the Middle Eastern countries would turn against us, and the American Empire would collapse and be pushed out if the Middle East. At least some of that has occurred—by involving ourselves in various wars, and killing hundreds of thousands of Arabs, Muslims…..we have fueled ISIS, and radicalized maybe millions. We squandered good will. We played into the narrative that the US is a warmongering killing machine. It’s also a tragedy that so many have lost their lives in the aftermath of the Attacks. Not to mention multiple refugee crisis

It didn’t cause an uprising, but it began the expansion of the executive branch. We are still feeling the effects today and we are circling the drain.

Partially correct. But OBL’s number one complaint was the American soldiers station in Saudi Arabia. We ultimately didn’t move the soldiers in these bases to other countries.

its b/c this was before Somalia. And after Americans sustained some terrible losses we did leave. totally different circumstances, but I bet that was the logic.

That logic only works when you’re the stronger power. I.e. USA dropping the atomic bomb ended WW2
