I was home for the summer and was about to go back to college. I had been nannying on and off with this family—who became lifelong friends—for years. I watched the second plane hit life with the Dad of the family. He is Lebanese. He didn't feel the unity, the peace, or the sense of community. As a business owner who traveled often, he felt scrutinized, watched, and prejudged. I think to honor the victims of 9/11 we should stop using them to justify hatred, and we should stop spreading a false narrative of unity felt by all.

911 changed my fathers brain chemistry. It started him down a spiral he never recovered from. Hyper nationalism & Fox ‘News’ echo chamber. They call it the alt right pipeline… sadly, I know who he’d be today if he was still alive. I know who he’d support if given the chance & it breaks my heart!

Even people who looked slickly Middle Eastern were targets. I had a friend who was Puerto Rican and Italian and was a “terrorist” more than once. It’s was crazy

I watched my dad get interrogated at the airport a few months later. He's an American citizen but fit a certain profile. They asked him ridiculous questions about his life, when he told them he was an engineer and his place of work they asked him to prove it. It was a Saturday so his office was closed, you couldn't just pull up your life on the internet but I happened to have one, wrinkly, old business card of his in my wallet as "proof" they let him go after that. He just got used to be "randomly" selected for years to come

This is the first I’ve heard about being barred from Law School. That IS vile and something SHOULD be done to protect these people. WTAF?!? But that was a minor part of what you were taking about. It makes me physically ill that this has been a lifelong thing for you. It absolutely is still happening now and is even possibly increasing again. The number of D’s in Congress that are perfectly comfortable 💩ing all over Mamdani as well as the Muslim candidates in this next election. And they STAY comfortable b/c no one is calling them on it. You know a group is green lit as a target when both sides of the aisle do it openly and uncontested. I see you and I am beyond frustrated that I can’t do anything other than stop it when I see it.

I was in college as well and one of my dear friends the time who is Muslim locked herself in her dorm room for many many days because of how afraid she was of people hurting her. We would bring her food to her dorm room talk to her through her dorm door, but she would not open that door. She would not do it because of how afraid she was because of how people were responding to and treating Muslims after September 11, so I 100% agree. This is Amerikkka.

I saw someone say that in order to honor those who lost their lives, we need to bear witness to the footage we have. and it just reminds me of where we are now with Palestine with people saying "if it's too much, turn the news off". they don't have the privilege to turn off what is happening.

My brother was a journalist in NY at the time, he did a piece that fall talking about the nationalism and extreme patriotism that started to happen. Personally I think more should have written about what you and others experienced.

My family’s long time bfs are Indians as in very successful doctors, lawyers, Wall Street, etc . Everyone knows them & loves them! But to listen to their stories of what their life was like when they walked into an airport is heartbreaking 💔 🥺

I had to deal with the shame of being relieved about the target being collectively on another group for once. I was in high-school on 9/11 and remember my siblings and I talking about we finally get a break from being the most hated, especially with our dad being active duty air force at the time. We experienced so much more respect from strangers. At the 10th anniversary, I looked back at that time and felt sooo ashamed at being happy that it was someone else with a target on their backs instead of commiserating with or helping them...

Honestly the post 9/11 prejudices that came on like a light switch are a big part of what radicalized me. I saw the shift how dark skinned people were treated and the absolute normalized racism against Muslims and it fucked me up because just in my core, even though I was young and really not processing the full extent of what happened I saw the shift in how people were treated and I fucking hated it and I still do.

I was in high school. I remember the Sikh employees at the local gas station (NJ full service, so you had time to read the note) posted a sign that basically said “we don’t even know anyone who would know those guys; totally different religion. Not even close.” I also remember the stars of the Disney channel (specifically Hilary Duff) talking about how much nicer people were in LA traffic and how people were holding the door open a little bit longer for people. They played that promo on repeat during commercial breaks.
