I’ve reconnected with an ex. But it had been 28 years. We were both young back then (in our 20’s) with seemingly different life trajectories. Fast forward, we’re both parents (I already was), we’re both first responders and we’ve both had similar experiences, have had similar family experiences. There’s now an understanding for each other that our young selves didn’t have. I’m glad it didn’t work out longer then, because I don’t think we would have lasted in a happy relationship. We saw each other numerous times over the years and the timing was always wrong for one reason or another. I would say l, if it’s meant to be, it will be, and if it doesn’t feel right today, maybe it will in the future. And maybe it’s just a funny coincidence.

This is a hard one. Generally, I'd recommend leaving the past in the past, which I am leaning towards. But, Op wants reasons to retry. I'd say keep it casual unless he's willing to move to OP's city. This wouldn't be restarting the old relationship because they are both in different situations then they were then.
