I don’t see what’s wrong with having a male protagonist in a horror game. The first resident evil was one of the most genre defying games and you can play as Chris or Jill.

How would a female protagonist in dead space do and I don’t mean this as like a sexist question no I just genuinely wonder how would a female protagonist do

I get pissed off when people say they like James, like no you’re not supposed to! His writing is well done but he is a terrible person!

I mean even if you look back at the ps1/2 era, there are still a lot of male protagonists in survival horror. Chris Redfield, Harry Mason, James Sunderland, Henry Townshend, Torque, James Earl Cash, Daniel Lamb, Captain Blake, Leon…

Too bad most of those great games are stuck on PS2 hell and cost up to 800+ Dollars wish they were more accessible

I think this might be a little cherry picking cause there is definitely plenty of male protagonist in older horror games

Same with the movies, the “final girl” trope is always fire

There is no way in hell Jill is ordinary, not even just her skill she also has like a action movie protagonist mentality

Honestly, with studios like Chillas Arts, you could put an ordinary woman in an ordinary situation and it could still be terrifying.

I do love that in older horror stories a woman protagonist doesn't survive just because she's somehow stronger than Chris Redfield. Usually she survives through perseverance and intelligence, which makes more sense than suddenly gaining the ability to punch a boulder.

one issue I have is that most of the original survival horror games that spawned the genre star male characters like sweet home, alone in the dark, silent hill and resident evil being the only exception with its duo of Chris and Jill which is inherently unique to the series and was followed by Leon and Claire and before it gets pointed out yes I know alone in the dark has a female playable character but the story doesn't change depending on who you play as so it doesn't really count

Like silent hill didn’t exist. The best know one. Resident evil 1. Most of the Japanese games never came west. That’s where most of the horror games were and are.

A lot of older horror games also have a theme of the horrors of women hood. Silent hill 3 is thr biggest example

I agree. But don’t use Modern RE3 remake as an example because she’s horrible as an overall character and doesn’t represent Jill as a whole
