@spaceplanethq: Gandalf wears one of the Three Elven Rings through the whole of The Lord of the Rings, and almost nobody who came to it through the films has ever been told. It is called Narya, the Ring of Fire: a gold band set with a ruby, and J.R.R. Tolkien hands it to him on the day he first comes ashore in Middle-earth. The gift itself is told in the appendices and in Unfinished Tales rather than in the main narrative. Círdan the shipwright, the only elf who knew where the wizards had come from, had kept that ring since the Second Age. He gave it away the day they met: "Take this ring, Master, for your labours will be heavy..." What the Ring of Fire does is the part that surprises people. It is not a weapon. Elrond says the Three "were not made as weapons of war or conquest." Narya's power is to rekindle hearts in a world that grows chill — courage, put back into other people. Peter Jackson's films put Narya on Gandalf's hand in The Return of the King and never say one word about what it is. #lotr #tolkien #lordoftherings #gandalf #BookTok
