@healthcarehenry: A 70-year-old woman says she’s afraid to sleep in her own home. Yvette Thomas, a South Side Chicago tenant with serious mobility and health issues, says her building has left her struggling with a broken elevator, an unsecured entrance, roaches, a strong urine odor and a damaged ceiling inside her apartment. She says the broken elevator has made it difficult to leave her third-floor apartment for medical appointments. Even more troubling, Thomas says medication delivered to the building was stolen, forcing her to choose between paying rent and replacing medication she says she needs to survive. FOX 32 Chicago visited the property and observed several of the conditions Thomas described. The property manager disputes that her maintenance concerns have been ignored and says it has been working to address the issues. No senior should have to wonder whether their home is safe. Housing is more than four walls. For older adults, accessibility, security and basic living conditions can directly affect their health and independence.
