I’m all for teaching young people financial literacy. But we have to ask: what exactly are we teaching them? I recently attended a “financial reality fair” with some of my mentees, and something stood out to me. The students were given a predetermined life: a career, an income, a partner, kids, bills—and then asked to figure out how to make the numbers work. But where was the conversation about choice? What career do YOU want? Do YOU want children? Do YOU want to own a business? What kind of life do YOU actually want to create? How do you increase your income instead of simply adjusting your lifestyle to whatever income you were assigned? They also had a section entitled “employment”. Not “income” or “streams of income”. The facilitators just assumed these kids would have zero creativity to build their own business or create any streams of income outside of just working a job. Financial literacy shouldn’t just teach young people how to survive within the system they inherit. It should teach them how money works, how to think critically about it, and how to intentionally build a life that actually belongs to them. The goal shouldn’t just be creating better consumers. It should be creating better thinkers, builders, owners, and decision-makers. What do you think—are we teaching young people true financial literacy, or just teaching them how to follow the traditional financial script? #FinancialLiteracy #FinancialEducation #YouthFinancialLiteracy #MoneyMindset #FinancialFreedom
