Last night my baby woke up again. I don’t even know which wake-up it was. Third? Fourth? At this point the nights kind of blur together. I picked him up, fed him, changed him, rocked him, put him down. His eyes popped open. Picked him up again. Rocked him again. Put him down. Crying. And somewhere around 3:30am I hit that point where you’re not necessarily angry or sad or anything you can actually name. You’re just…done. So tired that your whole body feels heavy. I was sitting in the dark nursery with him against my chest, staring at the little light on the monitor, trying not to look at the clock because knowing exactly how little sleep I was getting somehow made it worse. My husband was asleep. The house was completely quiet. The street outside was dark. And it felt like I was the only person awake in the entire world. I know that sounds dramatic lol. But if you’ve done the newborn nights, you probably know exactly what I mean. There’s something about 3am that makes everything feel bigger. The exhaustion. The worry. The loneliness. The “is this normal?” The “why won’t he sleep?” The “I love you more than anything but PLEASE go to sleep.” 😭 I opened this app while I was feeding him because honestly I was just trying to keep myself awake. And there’s this map. Every little glowing dot is another mom who’s awake. Some feeding. Some pumping. Some rocking a baby. Some probably doing exactly what I was doing, sitting in a dark room wondering how every other human on earth seemed to be sleeping except us. Then I got a notification. A mom from Germany had sent me a hug. Germany. I’m sitting half asleep in my baby’s nursery in the middle of the night and some woman I’ve never met, thousands of miles away, saw that I was awake too. So I sent one back. And I know this sounds like such a tiny thing. It IS a tiny thing. She didn’t magically make my baby sleep. She didn’t come take the next feeding. She didn’t fix the fact that I was exhausted. But something in my brain immediately went: “Oh. I’m not the only one awake.” And weirdly, that was enough. I looked at the map again and there were lights everywhere. California. New York. Texas. Canada. Europe. Little dots scattered across the darkness. All moms. All awake. All doing some version of the same thing. I think motherhood is strange because you can be doing one of the most universal things humans have ever done and somehow feel completely alone while you’re doing it. Millions of women have sat in dark rooms holding babies. Millions have watched 2:47 become 3:18 become 3:51. Millions have whispered “please sleep” into tiny heads. But when it’s YOUR dark room and YOUR exhausted body and everyone you know is asleep, it’s easy to forget that. Last night I didn’t forget. Because a mom in Germany stayed up with me until my baby finally fell back asleep at 3:51am. 🥺 She probably doesn’t know how much that tiny little notification meant. Maybe she was exhausted too. Maybe her baby was screaming. Maybe she was pumping in her kitchen trying not to wake anyone. Maybe she just saw another light on the map and thought, “she probably needs this.” She was right. So if you’re reading this during some ridiculous hour tonight with a baby on your chest… I promise there is another mom awake somewhere. Probably thousands of them. Feeding. Pumping. Rocking. Scrolling. Trying again. You can’t always see them from your nursery. But they’re there. And sometimes knowing someone else is awake with you is the closest thing to being held yourself 💛 #mom #baby #MomsofTikTok #momtok #momlife
