How long before all the conspiracy theories took off? How long were we united under one belief of what happened? Did the conspiracies fracture the unity that New York had cultivated? I know that the fringe has become mainstream.. how do you deal with the people who say this never happened?

I went to ground zero 7 years after and I’ll tell you the atmosphere was very heavy for me. It was a weird feeling

For me, the closest I can compare it to is the smell of an electrical fire. I experienced that a few years ago and it took me right back. And brought me to tears.

We flew in early November from Ireland (booked before the tragedy) I’ll never forget the smell even then and the dust but the atmosphere was the worst.. it’s unexplainable They had green tarps up around ground zero, my mum sister and I went to lay flowers.. another tourist climbed a lamp post to take pics over the tarp.. horrific.. he was swiftly pulled down and got a few slaps.. which he deserved. I remember visiting local Fire departments and they were just so lovely and thanks us so much for visiting NY… and all we wanted to do was thank them with the small gift baskets we brought from home… I’ll never forget how kind New Yorkers were that week.. how kind everyone was.. I never experienced it before or after in NY

I think that must have been very hard to deal with. Also the people who heard the crash when people jumped landed on the ground. So haunting. Those of us who just watched it on tv will never have any idea what people went through there.

My family had to cancel our annual thanksgiving trip after 9/11 but we went the following year 2002 and visit ground zero, still barricades and fence up, photos of loved ones and it still smelled like death and smoke even a year later. I’ll never forget it 🥺

My Dad went with his fire department in Connecticut as reprieve to help in the recovery process. I still remember the smell on his gear when he got home. I am sure that was only a FRACTION of the reality. I will never forget it though. Definitely what you have explained plus death. So terrible. 😔

I know the exact smell you’re talking about. Once in awhile, I’ll get a whiff of it and it takes me back in an instant

Even years after 911, I was at Saint Paul’s, and you could still smell the pungent smell of Ground Zero on the fireman‘s outfit on display, I’ll never forget that smell and the vibe in Saint Paul’s. Everyone was in tears, one of the most moving places I’ve ever been.

We could smell it in Nassau county. A brown haze came in and hung there for days. For us it was the smell of fire but not wood burning, it was like burning plastic and singed metal.

When would you say things felt “normal” again? People honking, less friendly, etc.
