I learned about Welles’ story during my visit at the 9/11 museum a couple years ago. A museum volunteer was telling us about his story. The volunteer revealed at the end that she was his mother. It was very moving.

I read “The Man in the Red Bandana” to my 5th and 6th graders for the first time this year, and I will be doing it every year now. It was an amazing lesson, and my kids were really invested!

I do too ❤️my kids walk away understanding that every day acts of bravery and kindness are what make our lives worthwhile. Love and human connection are what soothes our soul. The choice to put others before yourself, even if it means you are risking yourself in the process is the ultimate sacrifice, but recognizing that our differences make us stronger together is something any of us can decide to do on a daily basis.

I teach high school Science so I usually don’t talk about 911. I decided to this year when I realized I was the only teacher/staff who knew who he was. I started with asking my kids who their hero was. I told them Wells was mine and I was going to show them why. One of my boys after watching the ESPN video looked at me and said I want to be more like him

Librarian here...one of my 8th graders remembers us reading it in 5th grade...said he was the first person she thought about Friday morning -- his story impacts so many. (I include his story, Boatlift, and (now) an excerpt from Ground Zero in our talks.)

Dear God, Today, on September 11th, we remember the lives that were lost, the families whose lives were forever changed, and the heroes who showed unimaginable courage and sacrifice. 🤍🇺🇸 Lord, please continue to comfort the families who still carry the pain of that day. We pray for peace, healing, and strength. Thank You for the first responders, firefighters, police officers, and everyday heroes who put others before themselves. May we never forget the lives lost, the bravery shown, and how our country came together during one of its darkest moments.
